The old Orange County courthouse is a 5,000-square-foot space that houses Southern California’s oldest court building. An orange, granite, and sandstone building, it served as the seat of power for decades, since 1901. It is a cultural and social landmark, with the backdrop a popular site for smaller wedding parties.

Although weekend weddings are possible, (the facility is open one Saturday a month) the best times are usually weekdays, 8 am until 4 pm. As you’d imagine from its popularity, there’s a queue to a spot on the waitlist and it’s best to avoid walk-ins and make a prior appointment. The good news is that you can plan for your old Orange County courthouse wedding six months in advance, all of the processes can be arranged online.
Part of the documents you will need to present include your valid IDs (a passport or a driver’s license works). These are for the both of you, as well as for your witness(es). The witness is required to be present during the signing of the marriage license, you are at the discretion to choose your witness, provided they can speak English and are adults. In case you are doing a super-secret wedding, a confidential marriage license doesn’t require a witness and you only need to show up with your partner.
In terms of costs, a public marriage at the old Orange County courthouse costs $61 while a confidential marriage costs $66, with an additional $28 ceremony fee. Most reviews point to only a couple of minutes allocated to the wedding, five minutes for the ceremony, and an extra five for the shoot. This means you and your guests and photographers must be on time. The ceremony is conducted in a non-sectarian fashion, although it will be legally recognized.
The highlight of the wedding is usually the photoshoot which offers options of the stairways, the exterior, and the palm trees that line up the walkway. With an experienced photographer or videographer, you will get very beautiful shots from inside and outside the venue.
It is important to note that parking might be a challenge so prepare to carpool or find alternative parking, as well as a reception venue for the meal and party if you intend to have one.
